Frequently asked questions
Straight answers about what the platform does
If your question is not answered here, ask us directly — we would rather be clear before you subscribe than explain afterwards.
The platform
- What exactly is fund administration?
- Fund administration is the recordkeeping behind a pooled investment vehicle: maintaining investor capital accounts, processing capital calls and distributions, allocating income and expenses under the fund's terms, valuing the portfolio at period end, and producing investor statements and year-end reporting.
- Is this software, or do people do the work?
- Abacus Administrators is a self-service platform. You or your team operate it, which is precisely why it costs a fraction of a full-service administrator. We support you in using it; we do not act as the fund's administrator of record.
- What kinds of funds is this suited to?
- Funds and partnerships with a defined investor group and standard capital account mechanics — friends-and-family funds, emerging manager vehicles, syndications, and investment clubs. Complex multi-class structures with bespoke waterfalls should speak to us first.
- Can I administer more than one fund?
- Yes, with a subscription per fund. Tell us how many vehicles you run and we will set them up.
Getting started
- We currently run everything in spreadsheets. Can we move across?
- Yes. You load the investor roster, commitments, and opening capital account balances as of a chosen date, and run forward in the platform from there. Historical detail can be retained in the document library.
- How long does setup take?
- A straightforward fund with an existing roster is typically set up in a matter of days, gated mainly by how quickly your own records can be assembled.
- Do our investors need to do anything?
- Investors are invited to their own access, where they see their capital account, statements, and documents. Nothing is required from them for you to begin.
Scope and limits
- Do you prepare K-1s or tax returns?
- No. We produce the year-end reporting package your accountant uses to prepare the fund's returns and investor tax documents. Preparation and filing remain with your tax professional.
- Do you provide investment, legal, or tax advice?
- No. Nothing on this website or in the platform is investment, legal, accounting, or tax advice, and nothing here is an offer to sell or a solicitation to buy any security.
- Do you hold the fund's money?
- No. We never take custody of fund assets and cannot move money. Cash and securities stay with your bank, broker, or custodian.
- Do you audit the fund?
- No. If your fund requires an audit, an independent auditor performs it; the platform's records and reporting support that process.
Commercial
- How much does it cost?
- Plans are $199 monthly, $567 quarterly ($189/month equivalent), $1,074 semi-annual ($179/month equivalent), and $1,908 annual ($159/month equivalent). All plans are billed in advance and include the full platform with unlimited investors.
- Can we cancel?
- Yes. Cancel at any time; service continues to the end of the paid period, and you can export your records before it ends.
- Is pricing based on assets under management?
- No. It is a flat subscription regardless of fund size or investor count.
